BHAIRAHAWA, Aug 4: Government and private health facilities in the district are seeing a sudden increase in the number of patients with viral fever of late.

According to Lumbini Zonal Hospital, the number of viral fever cases at the hospital has doubled in the last two weeks.  The sudden rise in the number of patients seeking treatment at the hospital has led to a situation in which two patients are compelled to share one bed.

“A staggering 30 percent of patients at the hospital have been found to have viral fever,” said Laxmi Raj Regmi, the hospital’s information officer. “With the increase in patients seeking OPD service, we are reeling under severe shortage of beds,” he said.

Bhim Hospital in Bhairahawa has also been receiving about 40 to 50 patients with viral fever every day, according to Sarwajeet Barai, the hospital’s medical recorder. An equal number of patients with the same disease have been visiting Siddhartha Children and Women Hospital in Aamdal.

Medical facilities in other rural and urban areas such as Chipaghad, Bhodbar, Dhakadhai, Marchawar, and Lumbini also reported increase in patients with viral fever. According to Dr Ananta Kumar Sharma, medical superintendent of Bhim Hospital, muddy conditions and polluted water spread viral fever during monsoon.
