LONDON, Aug 20: Victor Wanyama headed in a late goal as Tottenham unconvincingly beat Crystal Palace 1-0 Saturday in the English Premier League.

The Spurs midfielder got his first goal for his new side, scoring from close range on his home debut following Harry Kane's header from a corner in the 82nd minute.

Palace is still without a point — or a goal — this season, having lost both of its opening games 1-0.

Earlier, Palace announced it had signed Belgium striker Christian Benteke from Liverpool on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee. British media reported the fee was 27 million pounds ($35 million), which would be a record for the south London club.

"Benteke's going to give our fans and us belief," said Palace manager Alan Pardew after the match.

Tottenham had the better chances but rarely showed signs of the clinical finishing on display so often last season.

New signing Vincent Janssen was the standout player, and should have scored as he and Harry Kane seem to be building a good partnership.

After a lackluster 1-1 draw against Everton, Tottenham seems to be slowly growing into the season.

"It's important to win the three points in the first game at home," Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "I think we fully deserved it."
