LEEDS, August 28: West Indies recovered from the early shock of losing two wickets off the first two balls of the day to make 427 all out and lead England by 101 runs at tea in the second Test on Sunday.

Shai Hope went without adding to his overnight score of 147 and Shane Dowrich was out for a first-ball duck as James Anderson opened the third day in dramatic style at Headingley. But West Indies captain Jason Holder made an attacking 43 from 54 balls and put together a partnership of 75 for the eighth wicket with Jermaine Blackwood (49).

West Indies was all out for 427 when Shannon Gabriel was lbw to Ben Stokes a couple of minutes after the morning session was extended for an extra half-hour.

That total gave West Indies a handy advantage in its quest to level the three-match series and bounce back straightaway from a humiliating innings defeat in the first Test.

England was 68-1 in its second innings at tea having lost Alastasir Cook for 23. Holder was the West Indies wicket-taker and England was still 101 behind. Mark Stoneman, in his second Test, was 35 not out and Tom Westley 4 not out.

Anderson took 5-76 after removing Hope and Dowrich to edges behind to start Day 3, moving England’s all-time leading test bowler to 497 career wickets and three short of becoming only the sixth player to take 500 test wickets.

The Holder-Blackwood partnership put the West Indies innings back on track, though, as the pair took the attack to the England bowlers. Holder hit seven fours before being caught at mid-on going for an eighth boundary. Blackwood also collected seven fours but was run out one short of a half-century.

Gabriel and Kemar Roach added more handy runs with their 21-run stand for the last wicket. Gabriel eventually fell leg before two balls after he was given out caught at gully but successfully reviewed the decision, with the ball coming off his shoulder.
