KATHMANDU, March 7: Women leaders of major political parties have said that the women should be given major roles with executive posts in the upcoming local polls.
Speaking at a program organized by Women's Security Pressure Group on the occasion of the 112th International Women's Day in the capital on Sunday, they said that women leaders were qualified and able for the executive posts in the local levels while expressing doubts to the party leaderships' unwelcoming trend for women in the executive posts. They also said that women are looking for positions to contribute to the country instead of just seeking positions for other benefits.
On the occasion, Minister for Urban Development Ram Kumari Jhankri argued that the implementation of the rights of women is not satisfactory despite huge success in ensuring a right-based approach. "We came through an age of complaint. Now, time has come for competition. Let's overcome the challenges by accepting them as opportunities," Minister Jhankri added.

Also speaking on the occasion, National Assembly Member Jayanti Rai said women have challenges for effective performance since they were not in the position to contribute.
Similarly, HoR Member of CPN (Maoist Center) Amrita Thapa Magar claimed her party was more progressive as compared to other political parties in terms of ensuring 33 percent positions to women. "The role of people's war is crucial for the women rights achieved at present," she said.
HoR Member Brinda Pandey argued women were deprived of rights in some cases as they were not informed about the laws formulated to benefit them.
Nepali Congress (NC) leader Pushpa Bhusal stated that establishing women in the party's leadership was a challenging job. She also called for specific constituencies for the women contestants to compete.
HoR Member Amrita Agrahari argued that additional struggle is needed since women rights would not be obtained just by beseeching.
Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Hari Prava Khadgi also spoke at the event.
