“I am going to stage the strike from 4:00 pm Saturday against the government decision to issue affiliation to the Jhapa-based B&C Medical College,” said Dr KC. “The decision was made by the cabinet yesterday [Thursday] in violation of a past agreement reached with us,” he added. “Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has investment in B&C Medical College.”
The government in an agreement reached with Dr KC in the past had stated that no affiliation would be granted to medical colleges until the passage of a new Medical Education Act from parliament. Issuing a statement, Dr KC on Thursday gave the government until 4 pm Saturday to withdraw the decision on B&C Medical College.
After the ruling parties withdrew the impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Dr KC postponed rescheduled hunger strike again, deciding to go for fast-unto-death from Friday in Dang district.
Dr KC began his 10th fast-unto-death from November 13 against anarchy prevailing in the medical education sector and it ended in three weeks after another agreement with the government. KC ended his 10th hunger strike following a 12-point agreement with the government representatives on December 4.
The agreement includes bringing the Medical Education Act, implementing past agreements, stopping the issue of affiliation to private medical colleges before new rules are in place, ending the commercialization of medical education, forming a panel to probe irregularities in the medical sector, opening a government medical college in each province, and taking action against Tribhuvan University officials who resorted to harming medical education itself.
