Our attention has been drawn to the flood of response to our editorial 'Ignorance kills' (July 16). The editorial team at Republica would like to clarify that we have the highest respect for all religions and we were not, in any way, trying to hurt their sentiments. In light of the menace of terrorism around the world, we believe we as a society need to wake up to the ever-present dangers of religious extremism of all kinds: from radical Islam, from hard-right Hindu outfits, from those who practice forceful conversions.

In the past we have also written about the risks to Nepal from extremist Hindu outfits and from forceful religious conversions. This time we choose to focus on radical Islam because of the recent wave of terrorist attacks linked to it, right around the world. We strongly believe any kind of religious extremism should be condemned and we as a society need to be vigilant about its risks. Nonetheless, if we hurt the sentiments of some people, we would like to offer an unreserved apology.
