KATHMANDU, April 14: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has made it mandatory for businesses and households concerned to separate the waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable while disposing them to the garbage collectors.

Issuing a public notice, the metropolis said the new rule will come into effect from Thursday, the first day of Nepali New Year 2079 BS. According to the KMC, it will be deploying two vehicles to collect the waste separately.

The KMC, the authority to look after management of the garbage collection of the metropolis, is often criticized for not collecting the household waste for days showing various excuses. Every now and then, the denizens suffer from the KMC’s inability to collect the waste materials on time.

The KMC has not been collecting the garbage from various locations for the past two weeks now. As a result, both pedestrians and households are forced to bear the stinky smell emanating from the waste, which experts say poses a risk to spread communicable diseases.

Interestingly, the local authority that has failed to collect garbage for weeks has issued a mandatory order for the local people to segregate waste materials into degradable and non-degradable garbage. The KMC has warned of levying a cash penalty of Rs 500 each time if any household fails to dispose biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste separately.
