KATHMANDU, June 8: A group of senior citizens which had been agitating for eight years at New Baneshwar area, putting forth various demands including the rise in the old age allowance, have wishfully terminated the strike, following the rise in allowance during the recent budget speech.
As they said, they decided to end the agitation as the government in the new budget came with relatively satisfactory provisions in regard with the social security of senior citizens, the government in the budget for the fiscal year 2019/20 announced Rs 1,000 rise in the monthly allowance from existing Rs 2000.

Agraj Samaj Nepal, a society of senior citizens, chair Maha Prasad Parajuli, said at least the government addressed the demand for the rise in allowance.
During the budget announcement, Finance Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada said some 1.3 million senior citizens (above 70 years of age) are estimated to be benefitted from the scheme. The government headed by first people's elected Communist Prime Minister Manmohan Adhikari for the first time had decided to offer a monthly allowance of Rs 100 to senior citizens.
