BIRGUNJ, Jan 30: The supply of white Indian eggs through the open border has raised the risk of the spread of bird flu.

The eggs from India's Ghodasan, Adapur and Godhadana markets contiguous with Nepal's Bara district are being supplied through Nepali transit points at Matiarwa, Kabaigoth, Simrongadh and Kachorba by the smugglers.

The local police administration remains unconcerned towards the open sale of white Indian eggs in the Feta Bazaar of Bara.

The government has banned illegal supply of birds and bird products, meat items, chickens and fertilizers from India, according to Animal Quarantine Check Post Birgunj.

Check Post Chief, Dr Hareram Yadav, said it is the job of the police to arrest the smugglers and 'our job is to only destroy the products'.

The Bara district has seven farms producing chicken eggs. The annual production of eggs stands at more than 12.9 million and worth Rs 150 million, according to the District Livestock Services Office, Bara. But when Senior Livestock Development Official, Dr Devanandan Sah, was asked of the supply of Indian white eggs to the Nepali markets he feigned unawareness.

The Indian white eggs are relatively cheaper and due to the open border the rampant smuggling remains unfettered and unchecked. RSS
