10 Indian nationals arrested for acquiring Nepali citizenship

KATHMANDU, May 7: The police have arrested 10 Indian nationals for acquiring Nepali citizenship certificates.

KATHMANDU, May 7: The police have arrested 10 Indian nationals for acquiring Nepali citizenship certificates.


Superintendent of Police (SP) Rabindra Regmi of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office, said that despite being permanent residents of the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh, they were found to have obtained Nepali citizenship by submitting fake documents. “The arrested are found to be relatives of each other as well,” he said. 


Those arrested are 55-year-old Bharat Prasad Gupta, 30-year-old Rahul Gupta, 50-year-old Gyanmati Devi Gupta and 39-year-old Gopal Gupta, who were living in Shankhamul, Kathmandu. Similarly, 44-year-old Ram Sundar Gupta who lives in Lagankhel of Lalitpur, 43-year-old Ram Pravesh Gupta of Gongbu, 46-year-old Bharat Gupta of Kalanki, 42-year-old Snehalata Gupta, 49-year-old Mindevi Gupta and 52-year-old Rajesh Kumar Gupta have been arrested.

It has been found that they were able to acquire Nepali citizenship certificates from the district administration offices of Parsa, Bara, Siraha, Rupandehi and other districts. After a three-month long investigation, the police arrested them from Kalanki, Sankhamul, Lalitpur and Patan areas of the Kathmandu Valley.


According to the police, Nepali voter ID cards and Indian ID cards were also found with them. SP Regmi said that those who were arrested were engaged in the business of making sweets and running sweet shops in Nepal.


“Further investigation is underway,” said SP Regmi.
