22 years of Royal massacre: Reasons still shrouded in mystery

KATHMANDU, June 2: Today marks 22 years since the Narayanhiti Royal massacre. Various programs are being held across the country to commemorate the massacre of the royal family members today.


In the evening of June 1, 2001, the dynasty of the then king Birendra Bir Bikram Shah was massacred inside the Narayanhiti royal palace.

King Birendra, Queen Aishwarya, Prince Dipendra, Prince Nirajan, Princess Shruti, Princess Jayanti, Princess Shanti, Princess Sharda, Kumar Khadka and other members of the royal family were shot dead. 


Although the investigation report was published that Prince Dipendra shot the family members before killing himself, ordinary public did not believe it. The then Speaker Taranath Ranabhat published the investigation report. The massacre that took place at the royal palace, which used to be under high security around the clock, is still shrouded in mystery.
