3,322 Nepali migrant workers repatriated from Malaysia and Philippines so far

KATHMANDU, July 12: As many as 3,322 Nepali migrant workers stranded in Malaysia and Philippines as a result of lockdown measures enforced to contain the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been repatriated by the Nepal government as of Sunday.

KATHMANDU, July 12: As many as 3,322 Nepali migrant workers stranded in Malaysia and Philippines as a result of lockdown measures enforced to contain the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) have been repatriated by the Nepal government as of Sunday.


According to the Embassy of Nepal in Kuala Lumpur, the government of Nepal had organized the first repatriation flight from Kuala Lumpur on June 18, 2020. Since then, 3,322 Nepali nationals have been repatriated from Malaysia and the Philippines through 21 different chartered flights conducted by Nepal Airlines, Himalayan Airlines and Malindo Air.

In addition to those repatriated from Malaysia, a total of 20 Nepali nationals from Indonesia, 108 from the Philippines and a few others from Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Taiwan and Spain also returned to Nepal in those chartered flights.


As many as 108 Nepali nationals stranded in the Philippines during lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19 were brought back home by Himalayan Airlines on June 12, 2020. Similarly, 69 Nepali nationals were rescued from various Police Custodies and Detention Centers in Malaysia.


A total of 39 dead bodies of Nepali migrant workers were also flown back to Nepal in the chartered flights.
