KATHMANDU, May 3: The 31st World Press Freedom Day is being celebrated worldwide including in Nepal with various programs today. The slogan of this year's World Press Freedom Day slogan is 'A press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of Environmental Crisis'. This emphasized the need to ensure the environment of press freedom.
World Press Freedom Day being observed today
The United Nations has decided to celebrate this day on May 3 since 1993 in commemoration of the release of the 'Windhoek Declaration for the Development of a Free, Independent and Pluralistic Press’ by a conference of journalists held in the city of Windhoek, Namibia, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The significance of this day lies in promoting access to information and creating a safe environment for journalists to fulfill their duties. The day focuses on the importance of truth dissemination and upholding press freedom. As part of the celebrations, a conference is being held in Santiago, Chile, convened by UNESCO.
