OKHALDHUNGA, Sept 30: Six men in Okhadhunga have filed applications at the District Court seeking divorce after amendment in the civil code, which allows even the men to file application for divorce at courts. Section 94 and 96 of the Muluki Civil Code enforced about a month ago allows men to file cases for divorce directly at the court. Previously, men had to file cases for divorce at the local level first in order to register the cases at the court.
The application for divorce by men at the District Court, Okhaldhunga has seen a huge rise since the enforcement of the new civil codes. According to Registrar at the court Netra Bandhu Poudel, men have filed as many cases as women at the court since the implementation of the new laws.

“In the last 40 days, 12 cases have been filed at the court for divorce out of which six were filed by men,” he said. According to him, the cases have been filed under Section 94 of the Muluki Civil Code.
Man files for divorce from prison
Narayan Bahadur Basnet, 31, of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-8 is currently serving a three-year jail sentence in Okhaldhunga prison for raping his own wife. The District Court, Okhadhunga on June 19, 2016 had sentenced him to three years in prison. Basnet has filed an application for divorce at the district court from the prison.
The application for divorce that he had registered at the Sunkoshi Rural Municipality on August 20, 2017 was forwarded to the district court after the new civil codes were enforced. His case was registered at the district court on September 21. Basnet has a son and a daughter with his wife.
