7 held with 14 kg gold in capital

KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police has arrested seven people in the capital on the charge of smuggling illegal gold.


The arrested are Pemba Dorje Sherpa, 26, of Bhotekoshi Rural Municipality, Sindhupalchowk, Dipendra Thapa, 38, of Suryabinayak Municipality-7, Saroj Thapa, 39 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-10.

Similarly, Bishnu Gautam of Panchkhal Municipality, Kavre, Rajendra Chhetri and Rabin Khatri of Suryabinayak Municipality-7, Bhaktapur, and Dip Kumar Sah of Janakpur Sub-metropolitan City, Dhanusha are among those arrested.


Acting on a tip-off that gold is being smuggled to Nepal from China via Rasuwa and Tatopani checkpoints, a special squad of Nepal Police raided Samakhusi-based Pemba Dorje’s house and confiscated around 14 kg of gold concealed in a cupboard and in a drawer.


Similarly, police also seized a vehicle, scooter, USD 600, Chinese Yuan 1, 199.


Police said they are carrying out further investigation into the case.
