80% of victims of violence are women: INSEC

UDAYAPUR, Nov 16: Cases of violence have increased in the past 10 months in the district, according to a data released by INSEC. Of the 73 victims, 80 per cent are women, according to INSEC. It adds that rape is one of the most predominant cases and between January to October, 2018, there were 39 incidents of rape.

UDAYAPUR, Nov 16: Cases of violence have increased in the past 10 months in the district, according to a data released by INSEC. Of the 73 victims, 80 per cent are women, according to INSEC. It adds that rape is one of the most predominant cases and between January to October, 2018, there were 39 incidents of rape. 


In the past 10 months, of the cases, 26 were rapes while 13 were rape attempts. Such  sexual assault has affected 21 children and 18 women, Bharat Khadka, a representative of INSEC said. The report further adds that from January to October 2018, there were 70 cases of violation of human rights from non-state actors. Likewise, there were 15 cases of domestic violence and five on polygamy.

Moreover, two people were murdered and a child was injured in a bomb explosion in the same duration. Other violence includes marital rape and petty crimes. Of the 70 cases filed in the court, 34 were resolved through mutual agreement.  


Participants also raised their concerns in incidents when minors were raped by other minors.


Bishnu Kumar Karki, chief district officer, said everyone had to play their parts to reduce sexual violence. He argued that weak law enforcement, changing lifestyle, an open society and social media were major factors that incited such crimes. "Weak law enforcement escalates crimes, insecurity and disorder in a society," he added.  


Spokesperson of District Police Office, DSP Arjun Ranabhat said that internet and its avenues had made more children vulnerable to sexual violence. He therefore urged one and all to use the internet with utmost care.
