Aadesh, Muna win gold, Bibek Shrestha sustains serious injury

KATHMANDU, May 5: Aadesh Bista and Muna Tamang have won the gold medals in the third Koteshwar International Taekwondo Championship in Koteshwar on Saturday.

KATHMANDU, May 5: Aadesh Bista and Muna Tamang have won the gold medals in the third Koteshwar International Taekwondo Championship in Koteshwar on Saturday. 


In the one-day tournament at the Koteshwar Taekwondo Dojang, Bista won men’s under 20 kg beating Sandeep Giri, while Tamang claimed the medal in women’s under 49 kg defeating Jyotsana KC. 


In men’s category, Sanskar Adhikari and Krishna Budathoki became joint-third. In women’s category, Kavya Timilsina and Amisha Karki emerged joint-third. Harsha Thapa won the men’s 31 kg category beating Ganesh Koirala, while Wangel Tamang and Nagesh Thakur became third. 


Samarpan Rai won the women’s 43 kg weight category beating Himani Magar, while Sushma Rai and Archana Sah became third.

In women’s 44 kg, Pragati Kuikel won the gold medal overcoming Namami Acharya, while Smarika Shiwakoti and Remiksha Regmi stood third. 


Also, in women’s 44 kg, Selina KC won the gold medal defeating Sweety Mandal, while Anisha Bakhati and Udita Khadka stood third. A total of 110 players took part in the tournament. 


Bibek suffers serious injury 


International gold medal winner Bibek Shrestha has sustained a serious injury during his men’s 38 kg final match. 


During the first round of the final, 13-year-old Bibek was leading the game 15-0 against Minal Shrestha. When Bibek jumped to kick Minal, his hand got cracked as he hit the ground. 


He was quickly rushed to the KMC Hospital at Sinamangal for the treatment. Khadka added that Bibek also sustained damages in his veins as well. 


“The doctor told us that they found some problems in the veins in his left hand. Further details about the injury will given after the surgery,’’ Khadka said. 


Bibek had won two gold medals each in two international tournaments in Korea and Japan. He also won two gold medals in two international tournaments in Hong Kong, while he won a gold and a silver in Bhutan.
