KATHMANDU, Jan 5: A committee formed to celebrate the 299th birth anniversary of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, has appealed to one and all to celebrate the anniversary in a grand manner.
Organizing a press meet on Tuesday in Kathmandu, the committee urged the government to announce a public holiday on the occasion of the 299th birth anniversary of Shah and National Unification Day, which falls on Poush 27 as per the Nepali Calendar.
The committee comprises various personalities including actor Manisha Koirala, former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police, Ramesh Kharel, and activist Bharat Basnet.

Speaking at the press meet, Koirala said that every Nepali should observe the birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah in honor of his contribution to nation building.
Former DIG Kharel said that nobody should forget Shah’s contributions to building modern Nepal. "We are going to organize various programs in honor of Shah and to celebrate nation building," Kharel said.
The committee also urged the government to establish a historical museum in the name of Prithvi Narayan Shah at Gorkha Palace in Gorkha where he was born and brought up.
It has asked the government to make arrangements for including Divyopadesh, a collection of teachings of Prithvi Narayan Shah, in school and college level teaching.
The committee will hold an assembly at 10 am on Poush 27 (Jan 11) to celebrate the birth anniversary of Shah.
