Apex court orders govt to repatriate Nepali nationals stranded abroad

KATHMANDU, April 16: Supreme Court has issued an interim order to the government to repatriate Nepali nationals living abroad in highly vulnerable condition in order to save their lives.


The apex court issued the interim order to the government keeping in view of the health and safety of individual and majority of people living in the country.

This comes amid decision of the government not to facilitate return of any Nepali migrant workers in view of containing possible spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The government has asked Nepali migrants to say in their respective countries for the time being, while directing its diplomatic missions abroad to provide necessary assistance to distressed Nepali nationals.


The apex court issued the order after a preliminary hearing on the petition filed earlier by Advocate Som Prasad Luitel. The petitioner sought the apex court's intervention saying that the rights of a large of Nepali migrant workers currently stranded abroad in pitiable condition return home need to be honored.


The apex court in the order has asked the government to make necessary administrative, financial and logistic arrangement to facilitate repatriation of such Nepali nationals without any discrimination. The court has also asked the government to be sensitive on the matter concerning repatriation of Nepali nationals stranded abroad in difficult circumstances.
