Army thumps Damak to reach semis

DAMAK, May 6: The departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club has advanced into the semifinals of the ongoing first Damak Gold Cup football tournament with an emphatic 6-0 win over Damak XI on Saturday.

DAMAK, May 6: The departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club has advanced into the semifinals of the ongoing first Damak Gold Cup football tournament with an emphatic 6-0 win over Damak XI on Saturday. 


Nawayug Shrestha gave Army a lead in the sixth minute and captain Bharat Khawas doubled the lead in the 20th minute as he beat Damak goalkeeper Bikesh Majhi in a one-on-one situation. Shrestha bagged his brace two minutes after that to end the first half 3-0 ahead. 


Bimal Pandey scored Army’s fourth in the 53rd minute. George Prince Karki scored in the 68th minute, while Shrestha scored his hattrick in the 58th minute to ensure a clinical victory.

Army had kept Damak under pressure throughout the match and Damak could not capitalize on some chances they got in front of the goal. Damak were rewarded with two corner kicks in the match, but could not convert. 


Both Jhapa-based teams have been knocked out of the tournament after Jhapa XI lost in the quarterfinal match. 


Army will now take on the winner of Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club and Saraswati Club in the semifinals. 


Shrestha was named the man-of-the-match and was rewarded with Rs 11,000. 


The tournament, which will conclude on May 11, will reward the winner with Rs 1.311 million while the runner-up gets Rs 611,000. 


A total of 10 A-Division and district-based teams are taking part in the tournament.
