KATHMANDU, Feb 8: CPN-UML leader and lawmaker Mahesh Basnet has warned of a future where the Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) will be impeached through a constitutional process.
Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu on Tuesday, lawmaker Basnet claimed that as many as 100 UML lawmakers are on stand-by for Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota’s impeachment. He also said that the Speaker can be impeached if the party takes initiatives to increase the number of lawmakers against him.

Stating that the house session will continue from Wednesday, Basnet said that the UML, however, would continue obstructing parliament unless actions are taken against 14 lawmakers including CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal. He also clarified that the obstructions by the UML are justified unless the Speaker runs the house smoothly and their demands are addressed. Lawmaker Basnet also said that the party is well informed about the US-funded Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact agreement being tabled in parliament tomorrow.
Similarly, Banet accused Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal of misusing the state power by writing a memo to the MCC headquarters. He claimed that it was a bit bizarre that such a memo was signed by a political party chairman and was sent to the MCC HQ on behalf of the government.
Furthermore, lawmaker Basnet said that the CPN-UML will fight alone in the upcoming local level elections. He also warned PM Deuba to be cautious as Madhav Kumar Nepal and Pushpa Kamal Dahal are two-faced leaders. He also accused the two leaders of trying to postpone the local-level elections.
