KATHMANDU, Nov 20: The National Sports Council (NSC)-appointed working committee has informed that 599 players are kept in closed camp for special training to prepare for the 13th South Asian Games.
Addressing a press meet in Kathmandu on Tuesday, the committee’s coordinator Rim Bahadur Rana Bhatt also informed that foreign coaches are paying special attention to 21 sports events. A total of 312 men and 287 women athletes are set to participate in the upcoming games to be hosted by Nepal in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur.
Rana Bhatt said that the NSC has left no stone unturned for proper training and preparation of athletes for the prestigious South Asian Games.
“We have proper planned training regimes for the players of different categories. We are hopeful of winning more medals than ever,” said Rana Bhatt.
Fencing, judo, squash, table-tennis, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, wrestling, kabaddi, handball, etc are getting special attention for the SAG.
Trainings and workshops of avoiding injuries, minimizing risks, mental health and psychology, doping, diet and nutrition, sports science, etc are part of the special training according to the committee.
Dr Prakash Pradhan stressed that Nepal teams are preparing appropriately for the games. In Karate, the team won three gold, two silver and four bronze. In women’s category, they won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Likewise, during the world taekwondo championship, the men’s team won a bronze medal followed by silver and five bronze medals in China’s Open International Taekwondo Championship. Recently, Nepal’s national women’s team savored Nepal’s first ever gold in volleyball. Finally, archery team registered a gold, a silver and two bronze medals, according to committee member Sushil Narsingh Rana.
