Bangladesh voting going on with sporadic clashes, leaving one reportedly dead

DHAKA, Jan. 7 : Sporadic clashes have been reported after general elections began on Sunday morning in Bangladesh, in which local media reported a person was stabbed to death.


A supporter for a ruling Awami League candidate was stabbed to death allegedly by supporters of an independent candidate at Tengor in Mirkadim of Munshiganj's Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, the Financial Express reported, citing a local police official.

According to the report, supporters of the independent candidate attacked the victim and stabbed him with a sharp weapon at around 9:45 a.m. local time, leaving him dead. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.


Another clash broke out between police and the members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Chattogram, the Dhaka Tribune reported.


The altercation began as at least 20 to 25 BNP members tried to bring out a procession to enforce their 48-hour-long hartal in the port city, and police tried to stop them.


Local media also reported a local AL leader in Munshiganj was found dead with stab wounds to the back of his head near a local polling center about one and a half hours after the vote began.
