KATHMANDU, March 8: International Women's Day is being marked today with a theme of 'be bold for change'.


The statistics of Nepal Police shows that numbers of violence against women are being reported in large number and the tendency of reporting such cases is growing.  However, right activists say the numbers of unreported cases are still in significant numbers.

In last 18 months Nepal Police received 1706 complaints of rape and 754 cases of attempt to rape. Nepal Police investigated 349 cases of women trafficking in the same period while 45 women suffered torture in the allegation of practicing witchcraft.


More strikingly, domestic violence is turning out to be more serious case. Police have received 15,127 complaints of domestic violence in the last 18 months.


Republica's Bijay Gajmer took up some representative cases of violence against women and prepared a short multimedia report, where some bold women speak for change.
