DAMAK, May 27: Initially planned to be completed in 18 months, the construction of the four-lane Birtamod- Bharatpur road has not shown any sign of completion within the deadline even though it was started nine months ago. As a result, the people in the area have been facing a lot of troubles.

“Although the deadline for the road construction is near, 20 percent of the work has hardly been completed,” said Ganesh Pokharel, a journalist.

One of the locals, Santosh Agarwal, expressed his sadness over the plight of the locals in the area. “Nine months have passed but the sewer and drainage systems at both sides are yet not constructed. The road is water-logged most of the time and the situation gets worse with every rainfall,” said Agarwal.

According to another local, Bhim Kharel, the company responsible for the construction work has not taken the work further. "The locals have been mounting pressure on the company to take the road construction work forward but in vain,” said Kharel.

The Road Division Office stated that a budget of Rs 270 million has been was allocated for the 4km Birtamod- Bharatpur stretch with construction work initially started in September. Division chief Shyam Kumar Yadav said that the work did not seem to continue despite his recommendation to carry out the work. “The construction work was handed over to a company three years ago. However, after that company failed, a new company was handed over the work,” said Yadav.
