KATHMANDU, July 2: The government has decided to prorogue the ongoing budget session of parliament.

A cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Baluwatar on Thursday made a decision to recommend to President Bidya Devi Bhandari to this effect.

The abrupt decision of the government comes amid growing intra-party dispute within the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP).

A meeting of the rival faction led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal held in Jhamsikhel on Wednesday evening had decided to seek resignation of Prime Minister KP Oli both from the post of prime minister and the party's chairman.

This came in the wake of Prime Minister Oli alleging that forces within Nepal and India were trying to oust him from power apparently for taking revenge against his resolute move to endorse Nepal’s new political map that includes Kalapani, Lipu Lekh and Limpiyadhura. These Nepali territories have been controlled by India for decades.

Earlier on Thursday morning, a group of leaders close to Prime Minister Oli held a meeting with Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at his residence in Khumaltar. The meeting was aimed at bridging the differences between the two top leaders. The government decided to prorogue the ongoing House meetings after the meeting between Oli’s supporters and Dahal remained inconclusive.

The decision to prorogue the ongoing session of the federal parliament comes at a time when Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact awaits endorsement from parliament. Sources said the decision was made as there is less chance of endorsing the MCC Compact through parliament due to differences within the ruling NCP whether to endorse the agreement on a $500 million US grant.
