KATHMANDU, Dec 16: The British School (TBS) has won ‘British International School Initiative of the Year,’ the prestigious UK Times Educational Supplement (TES) award, the only category open to international schools at the 2016 Independent School Awards.

TES is the weekly newspaper in the UK which focuses on school related news and features.

“The school used long standing relationships forged through a student led development initiative to make a significant contribution in the aftermath of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake. It reopened after just two days, providing a safe haven for students. The school also offered its hall as a base for Médecins Sans Frontières, it took in children from other international schools, and its grounds were used as a campsite for those without homes.

Teachers expanded their timetables to cover for absent colleagues and taught outside in temporary classrooms,” said the TES website.

“Winning the TES Award is a great achievement for The British School. It is wonderful to see the school recognized for its work in the community and reflects the school’s, and in particular the dedicated staff and student’s, commitment to the wider community in Nepal,” said Chris Decker, chair, Board of Governors (BoG).
