Calendar for upper house poll out

KATHMANDU, Jan 11: The Election Commission (EC) has fixed January 24 as the date for filing candidacies for the National Assembly election.

 

Unveiling a calendar of events after the government announced February 7 as the election date, the EC has said that it will provide election symbols to candidates on January 29. The election will be held between 10 am and 3 pm on February 7.


There will be a total 2,056 voters in the National Assembly election. As per the constitution, chiefs and deputy chiefs of all rural municipalities and municipalities and members of provincial assemblies will vote in the National Assembly election.

While 1,506 voters will be from local units, 550 others voters are the recently elected provincial assembly members. The vote of local representatives is given a weightage of 18 while the vote of a provincial assembly member will carry a weightage of 48 in the electoral college.


The election body has announced to publish the voter list for the purpose of National Assembly election on January 21, and final list of voters on January 23.


Of the total 59 members in the upper house, 56 members will be elected through the single transferable voting system with eight members each from seven provinces. The president will appoint three other members on the recommendations of the prime minister.


Among the eight members to be elected from each of the seven provinces, there must be three women, one dalit and a person with disabilities or a person hailing from minority community. Although 20 political parties have won seats in local and provincial assemblies, only 10 political parties have applied at the EC to contest in the poll.
