KATHMANDU, Dec 25: Christmas is being celebrated across the country marking the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ today.

As per the tradition to mark this festival on December 25 each year, Christians offer prayers and adoration to Jesus after drinking grape juice, cutting cakes and merry-making.

There is a belief among Christians that Jesus Christ was born to Lady Maryam and the angel forecast the birth of Jesus for the rescue of human beings.

Christian followers in Nepal are also marking the festival amid fanfare organizing a variety of activities across the country.

Thamel, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Pokhara and other cities used to light up with special celebrations on Christmas Day in the past. Amid fear of the spread of COVID-19, Christmas celebrations are being made with some precautions this year.

The Christmas festival has been recognized as a national festival in Nepal since 2007.
