JANAKPURDHAM, Oct 29: A three-member commission has been formed in Province 2 for collecting suggestions for fixing the name of the province and selecting a permanent capital.
The cabinet meeting held on Sunday formed the dialogue and suggestions committee under the coordination of Haribansha Jha, vice chairperson of the Provincial Policy Commission. Mohan Lal Chaudhary and Ram Pravesh Baitha have been appointed as the member of the committee, informed Internal Affairs and Law Minister Gyanendra Kumar Yadav.
“We formed a three-member committee to fix the permanent capital and name of the province,” said Minister Yadav, adding, “This committee will have to submit a report with suggestions from all sides to the secretariat of the province within the next 45 days.”
Province 2 still struggling to fix its name
According to Minister Yadav, he informed the Speaker Saroj Kumar Yadav about the newly-formed commission the same day through a letter.
As mentioned in the letter forwarded to the speaker, the provincial government will prepare a proposal for the name and capital of the province based on the report submitted by the commission. Ten months since the formation of the provincial assembly, Province 2 has finally taken an official step to fix its permanent capital and name.
The temporary capital of the province is Janakpur. Though there has been no controversy regarding the temporary capital, the name and official language of the province has been the bone of contention here.
There have been major differences in opinion between the ruling and opposition parties in choosing the name and language. The provincial government led by Federal Socialist Forum Nepal (FSFN) and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) has been pressing for naming the province as ‘Madhes’ while the opponents Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and Nepali Congress(NC) have stuck to their demand of naming the province as ‘Mithila-Bhojpura’.
Though there have been some hints from the NC that it can reach an agreement over the name, NCP has clearly stated that it won’t allow the province to be named as ‘Madhes’.
