KATHMANDU, Dec 7: Conflict Victims' National Society on Wednesday handed over a memorandum to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and urged the largest party in the parliament to pay attention toward transitional justice and transitional justice mechanism.
Claiming that the government has been preparing to amend the existing transitional justice act with the intention of providing amnesty to the perpetrators of serious human rights violation, the victims' society urged the NC not to let it happen.
The society, led by NC leaders Kul Bahadur Gurung and Binaydhoj Chand, urged the party to ensure that the amendment on the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Act would be as per the Supreme Court verdicts on cases related to transitional justice.
"The TRC itself is lobbying to amend its tenure for inordinate period and we drew the attention of the NC President Deuba toward it and not to let it happen. Likewise, we asked him not to let the government prepare an amendment bill against the Supreme Court verdicts," said Advocate Gyanendra Aran, a victim affiliated to the society.
"We have also drawn the attention of the NC president over the activities of the TRC in recent days. We told him that infightings within the five-member commission is not a good sign," said Aran.
Aran argued that the TRC itself has cornered member Madhavi Bhatta.
"As four members including Chairman Surya Kiran Gurung are in one group, we have noticed that Bhatta has been sidelined for speaking in favor for the victims," Aran claimed.
