KATHMANDU, April 19: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has urged his party cadres to hold protests to unseat the Oli-led administration.

Addressing an event to mark the 49th founding anniversary of the Nepal Students’ Union in the capital, Deuba argued that the incumbent government has failed to live up to the people’ expectations.  He was of the view that time has come to hold protests to topple the government.

“This government has done nothing to people since it came to power. Instead, it has done unfair treatment to people from various walks of life including teachers and journalists,” he said while asking the NC cadres hold protests so as to topple the government.

He criticized the government for not arresting those involved in the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant. “The government itself is protecting the murderers of Nirmala Pant,” he claimed.

NC President Deuba also assured to reconstitute Nepal Students’ Union which has remained inactive after the mother party Nepali Congress failed to pick a new leadership earlier this year.

On February 11, the Central Working Committee meeting of the NC approved the resignation tendered by Nainsingh Mahar, president of the Nepal Students Union, the student’s wing of the party.

On the same day, NSU President Mahar had submitted his resignation at the NC’s CC meeting saying that it would be wise for him to step down at a time when the NC leaders were sharply divided over whether to give continuity to the then leadership of the NSU.

The Central Working Committee of the NC had been piling pressure on Mahar, asking him to pave the way for the formation of an ad-hock committee of the NSU. The elections of the NSU had been on hold since the last two and a half years over the leadership row.
