Consumer price inflation moderated to 4.61 percent in March-April: NRB

KATHMANDU, May 12: The consumer price inflation moderated to 4.61 percent between mid-March and mid-April from 4.82 percent in the previous month, mainly due to the slow increase in the prices of non-food and services during the period.

KATHMANDU, May 12: The consumer price inflation moderated to 4.61 percent between mid-March and mid-April from 4.82 percent in the previous month, mainly due to the slow increase in the prices of non-food and services during the period.


The Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation Report of Nepal unveiled by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Sunday shows that non-food and service category inflation stood at 4.14 percent, while prices of food and beverage category increased by 5.21 percent.

In the previous month the consumer inflation was 5.01 percent. According to the NRB, the year-on-year consumer price inflation pacified in mid-April 2024 compared to 7.76 percent in the corresponding month a year ago.


Under the Food and Beverage Category, the year-on-year price index of spices sub-category increased 22.64 percent, vegetable 16.99 percent, pulses and legumes 10.94 percent, cereal grains and their products 7.59 percent and non-alcoholic drinks 6.06 percent. On the other hand, the price index of ghee and oil sub-category decreased 10.10 percent in the review month.


Under the non-food and services category, the year-on-year price index of miscellaneous goods and services increased 12.81 percent and the recreation and culture sub-category increased 12.61 percent.  The price index of education hiked 7.31 percent, while that of transportation decreased 0.33 percent last month.


The consumer price inflation in the Kathmandu Valley stood at 4.06 percent, less than half of 8.57 percent last year. Likewise, the price hike in Terai was lowered to 4.58 percent from 7.68 percent, the hilly region to 5.33 percent from 7.01 percent and that of the mountain region was down to 4.32 percent from 7.47 percent in the review month.
