KATHMANDU, March 9: Chairman of the ruling CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has said that the current UML-CPN (Maoist Center) alliance will continue for the next four years even as power centers are active to break it.

Addressing the party’s Secretariat meeting held at the party’s head office in Chyasal, Lalitpur on Friday, Chairman Oli argued that the current alliance must be maintained for four years at any cost.

He mentioned that it was not possible to consult the party before forging political alliance with the Maoist Center due to the complicated situation. “But the success we achieved is great,” a party official quoted Oli as saying in the briefing.

Chairman Oli further said that he had to work hard to break the alliance led by the Nepali Congress (NC). In his briefing, Chairman Oli added that different power centers wanted to keep the NC-Maoist Center alliance intact. "Various power centers were trying to prevent us from forging an alliance with the Maoists. They are still active now," he further said.

Chairman Oli argued that the new alliance was formed to defeat those power centers themselves. "No matter what it takes, we will keep this alliance intact for four years. Other parties are also committed to it," Oli said.

“Today's meeting was held to decide to advance the journey to power by partnering with parties including the Maoist Center,” said the official, adding, “The reason why the chairman had to keep the conversation with the Maoists a secret before joining the government was because of the situation.”

According to another official, Oli said that he helped to form a suitable team for the prime minister to make the work of the government effective. There is a complaint within the party that UML participated in the government by giving important ministries to other parties of the ruling coalition.

The secretariat meeting also decided to hold the convention representative council meeting on April 20-21 and celebrate the party foundation day on April 22. Within the UML, the representative council meeting is a powerful structure after the general convention.

The representative council meeting held every two years reviews the decisions made by the central committee meeting and the policies to be adopted by the party.
