DAILEKH, Aug 9: Tika Bhandari, 19, of Narayan Municipality-2 in Dailekh district was facing life or death situation due to health complication. She was admitted to the District Hospital, Dailekh and was in desperate need of surgery to prevent appendicitis from taking toll on her health.
Taking her to the regional hospital in Surkhet for treatment would have been too late. As time was running out, the district hospital's chief Dr Nirajan Panta consulted with the relatives of Bhandari.

With the family's approval, a surgery was immediately carried out. The doctors involved in the operation took a huge risk as the hospital was not equipped for such surgery. It had never been carried out in the district and everyone was nervous.
Nonetheless, the team of doctors led by Dr Panta took the gamble despite not having proper facilities for the surgery. They showed their expertise and professionalism, and eventually emerged successful while racing against time.
If such action was not taken, Tika's infection could have burst the intestine within six hours. But, after the successful surgery, Tika got a new life.
According to the hospital, the surgery of this type was the first one to be carried out in the district.
“There really wasn't much time. We had to act immediately,” said Dr Panta, after the surgery. “Despite not having necessary equipment at the hospital, we managed to do it due to our experience,” he added.
