KATHMANDU, April 3:  The deadline of second tranche of grant distribution for earthquake victims has been extended till mid-July.

The 12th meeting of the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) Directive Committee held on Tuesday decided to extend the deadlines upon knowing many earthquake victims were yet to receive the amount to rebuild their homes. Before extension, the deadline to handover second tranche amount was mid-April.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is also chairman of Directive Committee, directed the NRA to ensure that all earthquake victims entitled for second tranche receive the same. “All current hurdles must be eased to ensure each victim receives the tranche to return to their homes.”

Speaking to media, Chief Executive Office of NRA, Yubaraj Bhusal stated that they were prioritizing private residences, followed by reconstruction of health facilities and education institutes.  Bhushal added that ‘those rebuilding their homes on their own would not be entitled for the grant.’

He added that so far, 114,000 homes were already rebuilt, and another 390,000 were under construction. A total of 450,000 homes were damaged in the double earthquakes that struck Nepal on April 25 and May 12, 2015. The earthquake claimed 8,000 lives in 14 worst affected districts.
