KATHMANDU, July 30: Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has achieved remarkable success at the box office, shattering records for an R-rated movie. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film had an extensive production and marketing budget of $320 million. Within just four days of its release, the movie amassed an impressive $200 million in the United States and a staggering $438.3 million worldwide. This remarkable performance has secured its place as the eighth-highest-grossing movie of 2024.
The film is produced by Marvel Studios, Maximum Effort, and 21 Laps Entertainment, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. As the 34th instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the sequel to Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018), Deadpool & Wolverine has captured the attention and admiration of audiences worldwide.
‘The Lion King’ rules and ‘Endgame’ scores all-time record
The first Deadpool film set a benchmark for the highest-grossing opening weekend of an R-rated movie with a remarkable $132 million debut in 2016. Its sequel, Deadpool 2, followed suit with an impressive $125 million in domestic sales in 2018. However, the remarkable success of the third instalment has truly outshone its precursors.
Following its release, Deadpool & Wolverine has also secured its place among the top opening weekends in cinematic history, claiming the eighth spot, trailing behind 2012’s The Avengers ($207 million) and 2018’s Black Panther ($202 million). Among the ten biggest debuts in history, Marvel lays claim to six of them, further solidifying its dominance in the industry. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's collective worth surpasses an astonishing $30 billion, establishing Marvel as the highest-grossing film franchise of all time.
The success of Deadpool & Wolverine came as a much-needed victory for Marvel, following the disappointing performances of its previous releases, The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. These downturns marked the end of a 15-year winning streak for the franchise.
However, with the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has reclaimed its position as one of the highest-grossing movie franchises. Before the release of Deadpool 3, the biggest opening weekend in the US and Canada was held by Inside Out 2, amassing a staggering $1.46 billion at the box office since its release in June.
