Most of us are guilty of decorating our homes when we first move in and then doing nothing to it till something breaks down and needs replacing. And even then we try to get by with the bare minimum. But home décor needs to evolve and change. It has to reflect your moods and who you are as a person. Granted making major overhauls, like changing the drapes or the carpets or buying new chic furniture, might not be possible on a regular basis but there are some pretty neat ways you can rev up your space without breaking the bank.
Paint the door and window frames a bold color
Spruce up the regular door and window frames by giving it a fresh coat of paint. Don’t stick to the regular beige, white, or gray tones. Choose a vibrant color like royal blue, pink, or yellow and watch your space come alive. You can also choose two complementary colors like bright yellow and royal blue or pink and green and opt to paint the doors one color and the window frames the other. This is a really easy way to change the vibe of your space. It doesn’t cost much and it’s a project that can be done in a single weekend.
Make art from your personal photos
We aren’t telling you to make a photo collage. That’s so regular and boring. Pick some photos (digital versions) that you like, those that bring back fond memories and get creative with it. A little photoshop skills can go a long way here. Even if you don’t know how to edit using photoshop, a short tutorial on YouTube can teach you quite a lot. Put the photos together to make one single photo that tells a story. You can then get this printed on flex and mount or frame it and make it the focal point in your living space. And just like that you have art that’s unique and special.
Inspired living
Create a collection
Small accessories are great and can make a space feel lived in. But if they are placed individually in random places, they can end up looking a bit cluttered. Instead, create groupings of complementary accessories that will make more of a visual impact. This is a great way to display a collection of favorite items – vases, statues or other accessories that you have gathered over time. This is a really simple home décor idea that doesn’t require you to shop. Just roam around your own house to make up a grouping of similar things and see how it looks.
Think quirky décor
Quirky décor is all about being inventive, and this applies to functionality too. Be imaginative when buying décor items and use them for something other than what it was intended for. How about an old sewing machine table for a washstand or an old copper bowl for a sink? Similarly, don’t be in a hurry to dispose of leftover food and drink packaging before considering ways to feature it into your own interior style. An empty gin bottle can be re-imagined as a unique vase, and a biscuit tin can be used as storage for loose items.
Make use of fabric
A nifty way to add an element of interest to your home is to add some texture to it. You don’t have to replace the curtains or pillow covers and make huge changes for that. Consider adding visual interest by making use of fabric you have around the house. An old curtain could be repurposed to make a tablecloth. You could use a table runner as a carpet in the entryway. Simple line the table runner with a thicker fabric (like leftover curtain material) if it’s thin and you fear it will slide or you can use it as it is if it’s already a bit on the sturdier side. You can also randomly put throws on the sofa or toss it on the floor and place baskets with indoor plants on top of them.
Display your memories
Far too many homes these days hide all of the memories and keepsakes that make them so interesting. You want to walk into a home and have a sense of who lives there. So take the necessary step of finding ways to showcase our photos, notes and other dorky memorabilia. You could hang postcards on string lights, paste ticket stubs and other papers that you have collected behind the door and laminate it to create a cool door design, or simply display the souvenirs you have collected on mini trays in various corners of the house.
Simply tidy up
This probably isn’t what you want to hear since cleaning up is never fun, but adding a few pieces that ease organization can make a huge difference in making your space feel brand new. Consider installing coat hooks or bringing in a stylish coat rack coat by the front door. Then place a small folding chair underneath it to sit on when you take off your shoes. If you have wires and other knickknacks carelessly tossed about, buy storage bins that you can stack and use these to stow away loose items. You can also purchase inexpensive wicker baskets and place them strategically around the house. These can function as catchalls and will keep your space looking neat and tidy all the time.
