Deuba accuses govt of totalitarian intentions

KATHMANDU, April 22: President of main opposition party Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba, has accused the government of trying to impose a totalitarian regime in the country. 

Addressing a gathering of the party in the capital on Saturday, former prime minister Deuba urged the party rank and file to push back against the government's totalitarian steps. 


Referring to  Prime Minister K P Oli's move to bring the intelligence agency National Investigation Department, the Revenue Investigation Department and other key bodies directly under the Prime Minister's Office, Deuba accused Oli of concentrating power in his hands to impose authoritarian rule .

Deuba said the left alliance and intra-party deceptiveness within the NC were the major reasons for its defeat in the recent three tiers of elections. He instructed the rank and file youth in the party to do away with  the intra-party deceptiveness. He also stressed  the need for expanding the party organization and strengthening its internal unity . 


NC General Secretary Shashank Koirala said the party faced a humiliating defeat in the elections because it failed to publicize its glorious past and its ideology and to mobilize the cadres. He urged the party president to work toward settling internal differences and rifts .


NC senior leader Prakash Man Singh accused the the party president of failing to run the party smoothly. Pointing the finger at Deuba for the poor performance in elections, Singh urged that the   party should be run in line with its  norms and the party statute. 


NC youth leader Gagan Thapa said the party leadership should take responsibility for the humiliating poll defeat .
