KATHMANDU, Oct 9: The demands presented by senior orthopedic surgoen Dr Govinda KC are politically driven, and are not only related to bringing reforms in the medical education sector of the country, a Cabinet minister has claimed.

Talking to Republica’s premium show #2030, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel said that the demands raised by Dr KC are not limited to medical reforms and are rather driven by political interests.

“I do not want to talk more about his demands, but Dr KC’s demands are not only related about bringing reforms in the medical sector of the country,” said Pokharel.

“The agreements signed with Dr KC are in the process of implementation. So, I request Dr KC to withdraw his hunger strike in these times of global pandemic,” said Pokharel.

Dr KC has been staging a hunger strike for the last 26 days demanding reforms in the medical sector of the country. He has put forth a six-point demand with the government.

The government has formed a three-member committee to hold talks with the representatives of Dr KC.

In the meantime, a representative of Dr KC said that the government has shown apathy toward fulfilling the demands of Dr KC.

Reacting to the minister’s remarks, Pukar Bam, an aide to Dr KC, said that the minister’s claim did not make any sense. “If the minister says Dr KC’s demands are politically driven, the government doesn’t want reforms in the medical sector. It is not that Dr KC or his demands are politically-driven, rather it is the government which is medical mafia-driven,” he said.
