KATHMANDU, Nov 8: Dr Govinda KC, professor at the Tribhuvan University's Institute of Medicine (IOM), has sought information from President Bidya Devi Bhandari on the medical education ordinance, which was forwarded to her by the cabinet on October 23 for her approval.

“As per the right to information, I've sought information on the progress regarding endorsement of the ordinance,” Dr KC said. “The president should not come under the influence of any political party because she is the head of state and not aligned to any political party,” he added.

President Bhandari, however, has yet to approve the ordinance allegedly under pressure from CPN-UML leaders. Dr KC has also criticized the judiciary of Nepal, which he said is influenced by mafia.

Dr KC lambasted the recent court order not to scrap the medical affiliation granted to the controversial Kathmandu National Medical College and termed it as 'peddling of justice' to mafias.

“I have been fighting for quality medical education and people's right to health as per the spirit of the constitution,” he said. “However, the SC has gone against the fundamental rights of the people on several occasions,” he added.

“Corruption is rife everywhere but I will keep fighting for good governance.”

On Monday, Dr KC issued a seven-day ultimatum to the president to approve the ordinance and warned that he would start his 14th fast-unto-death from next Monday if the demand was not met.
