Dues of sugarcane farmers yet to be paid

KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Sugarcane farmers are yet to receive their payment for their produce, despite frequent directives by the parliamentary committee to the government to clear their dues.

KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Sugarcane farmers are yet to receive their payment for their produce, despite frequent directives by the parliamentary committee to the government to clear their dues. 


Different sugar factories are yet to pay the dues to the farmers.

In Tuesday’s meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) under the House of Representatives, Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies Dinesh Bhattarai shared that the sugar factories are yet to clear the dues of Rs 87 million. Last year, the payment due was around Rs 1.4 billion. 


"With the government directive the payment ratio is increasing. Compared to last year, the payment this year has gone up", he shared, adding that they have been coordinating through the ministries of finance, land reform and home. 


He further said that a directive was given to the local administration through the Ministry of Home Affairs for the settlement of dues.
