KATHMANDU, May 23: The Election Commission (EC) has suggested to the government to conduct the midterm elections announced for November 12 and November 19 in a single phase.
The EC suggested to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to conduct the mid-term election in a single phase in view of ease in the management amid a meeting held between EC representatives and PM Oli on Saturday.
EC issues seven-point directive to govt
President Bidya Devi Bhandari dissolved parliament and announced midterm elections for November 12 and November 19 on the recommendation of PM Oli on Friday.
Speaking about the discussion with PM Oli, the chief election commissioner, Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said that it is EC’s constitutional duty to successfully conduct elections once the government announces the election date. “We have abundant time for preparation and have suggested to the government to conduct the election in a single phase,” he added.
In the meeting, the EC representatives also suggested PM Oli create a favorable political environment for election, maintain peace and security, prevent and control the COVID-19 infection among others.
Similarly, on his part, PM Oli urged EC to conduct the election on the announced dates at any cost.
