KATHMANDU, Feb 1: The government has informed the international community that its priority is to hold elections at the earliest in order to implement the new constitution.
Organizing a meeting with Kathmandu-based diplomats at his office on Tuesday to apprise them of the political and other developments in the country, Minister for Foreign Affairs
Prakash Sharan Mahat said the government is working to amend the constitution in order to bring the agitating parties on board the election process. The foreign minister argued that the election as per the new constitution is the only way to bring political stability to the country.
Mahat had said that the government is planning to announce the date of local level election very soon.

“We have some challenges in implementing the new constitution. We are making efforts to convince the disgruntled parties to participate in the elections,” he had said.
On the occasion, Minister Mahat also solicited financial support from development partners. Arguing that Nepal will be self-reliant once the country heads to political stability after the election, he asked all friendly countries and development partners to continue their support until Nepal becomes self-reliant.
Representatives of all Kathmandu-based embassies including the United Nations were present at the briefing. Mahat asked the representatives to participate in the upcoming Infrastructure Investment Summit being held in Kathmandu.
Dismissing allegations from some quarters that Nepal was siding with one particular country, while ignoring others, Mahat said Nepal accords equal importance to all the friendly countries including immediate neighbors India and China.
On the occasion, diplomats had inquired about the government’s plan to address the demands of the agitating parties, hold local election and address issues related to transitional justice. Diplomats had also inquired about the failure of the government to spend on development.
