KATHMANDU, Oct 21: Home-based workers deserve respect for their contribution to society, said participants of a rally organized in the capital to mark the International Home-Based Workers' Day 2019, on Sunday.

Stating that the home-based workers are the unsung heroes, participants of the rally stressed the need of respecting every kind of profession.

Speaking at the inauguration of the rally, Deependra Kafle, secretary of the National Commission for Women, said it is important to realize that every kind of profession should be respected.

According to social activist Chandani Joshi, home-based workers are great contributors to society and unsung heroes who barely get in limelight but truly deserve appreciation for their work. However, despite continuous efforts and initiations like this, a lot of people in our nation are still unemployed. It is due to this reason that more organizations need to be established to recognize home-based workers, added Joshi who represents Home Net South Asia.

Hundreds of people, majority of them women, joined the rally that started from Bhrikutimandap.

The rally was attended by members of seven different organizations -- Sabah Nepal, Center for Labor and Social Studies (CLASS), Home-based Workers Concern Society Nepal (HBWCSN), Khokana Women's Awareness Society (KWAS), SAATHI, Women for Human Rights (WHR) and Home Net South Asia – that have been providing trainings to the home-based workers.

The rally was joined by former Miss Nepal Sadichha Shrestha, who is the brand ambassador for SABAH Nepal.

“Society can perform better only when people are given due recognition for their work. Celebrating days like this is a way of appreciating people who have figured out home-based ways for source of income along with fulfilling their daily roles,” Shrestha told Republica. “Over all these years, we have definitely seen a lot of positive changes in these home-based workers. We see them more confident, energized, vocal, and expressive,” said Chandani Joshi.

These platforms have also helped the members become good orators with good commanding skills. “I've started to feel more confident after getting recognized as a -based worker,” said Sabita KC, one of the women participating in the rally.

“There were times when I felt worthless about my own life but being recognized as a home-based worker has definitely helped me feel better about myself and my work,” she said, adding, “Honestly, every work is equal and deserves respect.”
