KATHMANDU, June 18: Members of a panel formed to work on reforms in the medical education sector have raised serious concerns over the fees charged by private medical colleges for MD/MS courses.
Former vice chancellor of Tribhuvan University Kedar Bhakta Mathema was among the experts to express dissatisfaction as the recommendations made by the panel has not been implemented.
Other members of the panel include Dr Arjun Karki, vice chancellor of Patan Academy of Health Sciences, Dr Madan Upadhyay, director at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Dr Ramesh Kant Adhikari, former dean of the Institute of Medicine, and Dr Bhagwan Koirala, former director of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
Issuing a joint-statement on Sunday, they objected against the unethical admission fee and other charges taken from the medical students. It has been reported that the colleges enroll students violating the merit basis and charge fees more than the official ceiling set by the government.
“They are not allowed to do so against the rules,” they said, lambasting the Tribhuvan University, which is entitled to fix the ceiling and implement the law.
Medical colleges have been blamed for charging up to Rs 10 million from a student against the official ceiling of Rs 2.5 million for the master's degree programs.
