KATHMANDU, June 18: Helambu Rural Municipality in Sindhupalchowk district is witnessing a heavy rainfall since this evening. This has increased the water level in the Melamchi River again to dangerous levels, leaving people living on the banks of the Melamchi River to stay awake.
It is currently raining heavily here and the water level in Melamchi River has returned to the same level as that of June 16, said a local of Helambu. Locals fear that the swollen Melamchi River could create similar havoc in the settlements downstream the River.
Bhotekoshi water level recedes but flood fears remain
People living in the lower belt of Helambu Rural Municipality and Melamchi Municipality are taking to the social media platform to ask people living near the River to stay alert and move to safer locations. “The Melamchi River is wreaking havoc once again. Please stay alert and stay safe,” reads most posts in social media.
Flood and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall on June 16 caused a huge loss of life and property in Helambu and Melamchi. While many were killed, dozens others went missing as the swollen Melamchi River washed away several houses and other development infrastructures. The loss of property caused due to flood and landslide has been estimated to be in the billions.
