Five arrested over illegal kidney transplant at Nidan Hospital

KATHMANDU, Oct 17: The Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau of Nepal Police on Wednesday arrested six persons including a doctor on the charge of illegally transplanting kidney at Nidan Hospital in Lalitpur.

KATHMANDU, Oct 17: The Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau of Nepal Police on Wednesday arrested six persons including a doctor on the charge of illegally transplanting kidney at Nidan Hospital in Lalitpur.


According to Superintendent of Police Govinda Thapaliya, the arrested were found taking away a kidney of a garment worker by luring him with money. “It is found that some Rs 300,000 was deposited in the bank account of the victim after his kidney was taken away,” he said.

Dr Rajesh Pant of Nidan Hospital had transplanted the kidney on Shankar Lal Lama of Doramba-3 of Ramechhap district some three months ago.


Those arrested in connection with the crime include the kidney-recipient Lama, Chief Executive Officer of Nidan Hospital Bipendra Pradhan, Legal Officer at Nidan Hospital Kumud Kumar Bhattarai, Dr Pant and Section Officer at Lalitpur District Administration Office Ram Chandra Ale. Police said the arrested will be charged under the Human Trafficking (Control) Act 2064 BS.


As per the law, only close relatives can donate kidney for the purpose of transplanting. But the garments factory worker was made to pose as a nephew of the kidney recipient, police said.


Kidney-recipient Lama is a former chairman of the then Doramba VDC.
