Foreign Minister Mahat to attend UNHRC session in Geneva

KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat is leaving for Geneva Saturday to participate in the High Level Segment of the thirty-fourth session of the United Nations Human Rights Council to be held from 27 February to 3 March, 2017.

KATHMANDU, Feb 25: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat is leaving for Geneva Saturday to participate in the High Level Segment of the thirty-fourth session of the United Nations Human Rights Council to be held from 27 February to 3 March, 2017. 


Minister Mahat is leading a Nepali delegation comprising senior officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in Geneva, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Mahat is scheduled to address the high level segment of the UN Human Rights Council on 28 February. 


The Foreign Minister will also solicit support from the member States of the United Nations on Nepal’s candidature to the UN Human Rights Council for the term of 2018-2020, the elections for which are being held in New York in October-November this year. 

On the sidelines of the session, Minister Mahat will hold bilateral meetings with the Foreign Minister of Switzerland, the Minister for International Development of Australia, the Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, and the Federal Minister for Law and Justice of Pakistan, among others. 


While in Geneva, Minister Mahat will also meet the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organizations (WIPO). He will return home on March 4.RSS
