THINI, Jan 26: A fresh snowfall in Mustang has caused the temperature to further plummet affecting the life. The snowfall coupled with rain has thrown the normal life out of gear, bringing transportation services to a halt. The District Police Office, Mustang, said almost all parts of the district including Jomsom, Muktinath, Lomanthang and Lete have received the snowfall.
Following the snowfall, transport services along the Beni-Jomsom, Jomsom-Muktinath and Jomsom-Lomanthang roads have come to a halt as snowfall thickly blanketed the roadways. Jomsom received snow measuring up to one foot and settlements above Jomsom experienced the snowfall up to two feet. Three rural municipalities--Lomanthang, Lo Ghekar and the Thasang-- have been disconnected to the communications services due to adverse weather.
Heavy snowfall affects mountain districts
People are obliged to stay indoors to avoid the biting cold, said a local Deu Bahadur BK of Jomsom. Livestock cannot be taken out for grazing. They are being provided dried fodder.
The Jomsom Airport is covered by the snow up to one foot. Flights have been disrupted. Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) Jomsom office said they are waiting for the weather to improve so that they could start works to clear the mass of snow.
The Tara Airlines operates two flights a day on the Pokhara-Jomsom route. The under-construction development projects have been hampered by the snowfall. People of Upper Mustang have already moved to downhill to escape the chilling cold. However, rain and snowfall have brought cheers to the farmers who hope for favourbale impact on their winter crops such as apple, barely, wheat and buckwheat. This is the fourth time the district received the snowfall.
